GRAND FINALE OF THE ANNUAL ITIHAAS WRITERS' FORUM 2011

A REPORT

The ITIHAAS Young Writers’ Forum was launched in year 2010 with the objective of providing the students a platform to document and exhibit our disappearing oral traditions and local history.

This year the theme was ‘Shatak Ko Salaam’ (a salute to hundred). The response was overwhelming with participation from over 131 schools who worked in teams under the able supervision of their mentors in respective categories.

Cheshta       Classes IV and V
Utsaah         Classes VI and VII
Jumbish       Classes VIII and IX
Udgaar        Classes X and XI

July 22, 2011
Teen Murti Auditorium

For the ANVESHAN Felicitation Ceremony, twenty eight finalist schools were invited and the awards for the meritorious entries were given away by the Chief Guest Mrs. Gursharan Kaur (Wife of the Prime Minister of India).

Dr. Gautam Sengupta (Director General, ASI) presided over the event as Guest of Honour. He spoke to the children, answered their questions and shared his views on issues like cultural prejudice and the need to value heritage.

Also present at the occasion was Prof. Mridula Mukherjee (Director, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library) who in her address emphasized on importance of organizations who are making our collective heritage accessible to the youth in a creative way.

The programme began with activities for the participants. While categories Cheshta and Utsaah hunted for treasures hidden all over the legendary Teen Murti Bhawan, Jumbish and Udgaar painted their views on Me And My Heritage on tiles. All of them, despite being from schools from all over the country, became friends as they discovered what they shared in common- love for heritage and traditions.

Mr. Rajdeep Pathak (Programme Executive, GSDS) was the compare for the event. After making an introductory speech on ANVESHAN 2011, he announced the winners.

Sarthak Malhotra, a student of class XI who has been walking with ITIHAAS for the last five years spoke about his experience with ITIHAAS.

Some participants also shared their journey of working with peers and mentors on their projects.

Smita Vats (Founder Director, ITIHAAS) made a brief presentation on ITIHAAS’s work to the audience.

Prashant Gautam, another student turned ITIHAAS volunteer gave the vote of thanks.

While reading the projects submitted by the children, the judges knew that they were in a difficult position as all the projects were so well done and deserved recognition. Each work showed ingenuity in creativity, thorough research and keenness for the hidden story.

We are grateful to the NMML for supporting the programme.

ITIHAAS Khel Khilone

 ITIHAAS launches ITIHAAS Khel Khilone

"When I was a child I had the freedom to make my own toys out of trifles and create my own games from my imagination. In my happiness my playmates had their full share; in fact the complete enjoyment of my games depended on their participation in them. One day, in this paradise of our childhood, entered a temptation from the market world of the adult. A toy bought from an English shop was given to one of our companions; it was perfect, big and wonderfully life like. He became proud of the toy and less mindful of the game; he kept that expensive thing well away from us, glorying in his exclusive possession of it, feeling superior to his playmates whose toys were cheap.
I am sure if he could have used the modern language of history he would have said that he was more civilized than ourselves to the extent of his owning that ridiculously perfect toy. One thing he failed to realize in his excitement- a fact which at the moment seemed to him insignificant- that this temptation obscured something a great deal more perfect then his toy, the revelation of the perfect child.  The toy merely expressed his wealth, but not his creative spirit, not the child's generous joy in his play, his open invitation to all who were compeers to his play-world."
-- Rabindranath Tagore, Civilization and Progress

It has been 50 years when Russian space science conquered space and broke long cherished dream of the USA. How was the world of education to remain untouched by consequent creation of a new power equation in international geo politics? The USA had good reason to feel intimidated by the erstwhile USSR. The academic rigour that the Union's traditional educational system boast of, the streak for specialization in science and technology that gave it an edge over European countries and the USA were soon to come under close scrutiny of the educationists of these countries.

This was also the occasion of constituting of the Kothari Commission in order to revamp the education system in India. Russian influence is evident from unprecedented emphasis given to two elements: one: knowledge of science and two: vocational training. (As the first two goals of education are defined as: “Education for increasing productivity” and “Education for accelerating process of modernization”)

Russia still has world's largest number of academic institutions at all levels, fairly good percentage of educated population. But the traditional tertiary system has been replaced by the modern Bologna system. It is baffling that when other countries discovered an enviable model in the USSR's approach, what made the latter so apprehensive about it that they had to go in for reform, even if only structurally? And was it a message for all the rest of us to.. Pause.. AND Think about this?

So, now India has developed NCF ’05 which has been instrumental in revamping approach to learning. It has evolved locally keeping in mind the strength and challenges of the regional learner profile. It has its share of criticism as well. Yet, it will go a long way in redefining a truly holistic and inclusive approach to curriculum development.

Thoughts above are strictly author's own opinion and do not affiliate to ITIHAAS as an organization.

ANVESHAN 2011: Shatak Ko Salaam

ITIHAAS Young Writers' Forum, ANVESHAN 2011 brings yet again an opportunity for the budding writers, reporters and artists to take a leap from textbooks to streets.
The ‘100’ that excites us all the most is the century – a shatak – that a batsman scores on a cricket field. The euphoria sees no bound. Ever wondered why it’s so important to score a century? Why can’t a score of 95 or even 99 mean the same? ANVESHAN, this year, is precisely about deciphering this conundrum.

Hundred can mean much more than just a number. It consolidates! It is a token of stability, almost synonymous with credibility and sustenance. That’s why it is celebrated!

Think of anything that has been around for a hundred years – a building, a post office, an artefact and of course, a grandparent! Don’t they all leave us awestruck by their sheer longevity, their mileage?

It is always baffling to find out what goes into accomplishing the mystical figure of a hundred. There is always an interesting story to unearth about its legacy, its journey, its travails and triumphs. They all deserve a salute from us. So, let’s offer them our ‘Salaams’ by celebrating their journey- “SHATAK KO SALAAM”. ITIHAAS invites you to be a part of this celebration- come, participate in ANVESHAN 2011- SHATAK KO SALAAM!

Almost there!

The 100th year marks an epoch in a lifecycle. As you start off with the search, you may find quite a few examples that, in 2011, are proudly experiencing the delight of being 100. But there will also be cases where your subject is either approaching the magical figure in a few years’ time or is a little past it, brimming with anticipation and a treasured hangover respectively. So, to bring them all under the umbrella of ANVESHAN, we provide you a leeway of 5 years on either side of 100.
